Acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to provide quality care
to young children and their families, whether in a child care center
or
family child care home, requires continuing education. The competency
areas listed above identify six general areas of skill and education
necessary to be a competent caregiver. Competent caregivers:
- Have knowledge of child growth and development to foster appropriate
expectations of children and serve as a basis for planning appropriate
learning experiences
- Involve families and maintain open, friendly relationships between
home and care settings
- Are skilled planners, organizers, and communicators
- Take advantage of opportunities for personal and professional growth
The Competency Areas identify key topics in early childhood education
and may be used to guide training toward the national CDA Credential.
It
is strongly recommended that caregivers attend training in all six
competency areas on a regular basis. |
