Listening and Talking

A text and print rich environment are essential to language development. When setting up these areas there are a few details to remember:

  • Have pictures displayed at children’s eye level.
  • Have books that include different cultures, abilities, genders and that promote diversity.
  • Pictures should be realistic and child friendly.
  • Set up reading areas with books displayed in an inviting manner.
  • It is also a good idea to label shelves and everyday items with realistic pictures and the printed word.
