Personnel policies are critical to the functioning of your program. Employees will know what is expected of them, what their rights are, and what they can expect of the program.
Topics you may choose to address when creating your personnel policies:
- Salaries—How they are set for each job description and when payments are made
- Vacation pay—Amount of vacation and any holidays
- Family/medical leave—When staff become eligible, how much they are allowed, and who qualifies
- Sick/personal leave—Guidelines for how much an employee accumulates and how it can be used
- Hours—When the employee is scheduled to be at work
- Benefits—Describe any additional benefits the program offers such as insurance or retirement plans
- Probation period—Most programs have a probationary period
- Termination—Develop a termination policy
- Professional development—Expectations for in-service and professional development; are the costs covered?
- Health requirements—Initial examinations, tuberculin testing
- Supervision—List supervisors and chain of command

- Grievance procedure
- Dress code
- Procedure for absences
- Drug free policy
- Reimbursement procedures
